EXAM techniques for ITIL Foundation Certification

  • There are 40 questions, so you have about 90 seconds for each. This doesn’t sound like much time, but it is. In reality, many questions will take you much less time than this.
  • Read each question carefully, paying particular attention to negatives, such as ‘Which of the following is NOT true?’. Many questions are phrased in this way simply because it is easier for the question setters to think up one wrong example than three. Also, pay attention to questions that are phrased, ‘Which of the following is the BEST answer?’. This indicates that all four answers potentially have some merit.
  • Always work on eliminating the wrong answers first. This will help to avoid making simple mistakes and can leave you with perhaps two options instead of four and a better chance of selecting the correct answer.
  • Answer with only one option per question. There is only one right answer.
  • There will only ever be four options: A, B, C or D. Ensure no other options are selected on your answer grid.
  • Answer the straightforward questions first and return to more complex ones, or ones that you are unsure of, later.
  • If you think you have found an obvious right answer, sense-check that all the other options are wrong.
  • Answer all the questions. Don’t leave blanks on the answer grid.
  • When tackling questions that you are unsure of, try the following:
  • Try to eliminate some of the options.
  • See if there are any clues in another question.
  • In the final resort, take an educated guess.
  • Take care in changing an answer. Unless it is clearly wrong (e.g. because you misread the question initially) your first instinct is often proven right.

Points to remember:

  • There is no negative marking (i.e. marks are not deducted for wrong answers).
  • There aren’t any trick questions; the objective is to test your knowledge and understanding.
